The Physics Laboratory at Bristol is a vibrant and world-leading research department, with innovative and dynamic research groups working across the whole breadth of Physics.

Central to the life of the department is undergraduate teaching where our students learn and develop in this research atmosphere. You will be taught by world experts from our internationally leading research groups in theoretical, particle, condensed matter and nanoscale physics, as well as astrophysics. The excellent teaching facilities include dedicated computer rooms and an £8 million teaching laboratory for undergraduates. All our programmes have been accredited by the Institute of Physics.

Programmes available

MSci Physics

BSc Physics

MSci Physics with Astrophysics

BSc Physics with Astrophysics

MSci Physics with Industrial Experience

MSci Physics with Study in Continental Europe

BSc Physics with a Preliminary Year of Study

MSci Mathematics and Physics

MSci Physics and Philosophy

BSc Physics and Philosophy

Programme Structure

We offer a wide range of three- and four-year programmes leading to BSc or MSci degrees. Flexibility is key, with transfer between the BSc and MSci programmes allowed up until the end of the second year. The first year of the Single Honours Physics programme consists of two or three compulsory mathematics and physics units plus one, two or three units available in the University Open Unit catalogue. Typical choices include: languages, chemistry, astronomy, philosophy and mathematics.

For Joint Honours programmes, transfer to Single Honours programmes is permitted at the end of the first year. In the second and later years, a diverse range of optional units in physics and related programmes is available.

Teaching and Learning

Lectures are the principal way of covering the programme material. In the first year, tutorials are used to improve your problem-solving skills and discuss current topics in physics. In later years, problems classes are led by the lecturer on the specific course. There is also small-group training in presentation skills and scientific writing. Experimental work is carried out under the supervision of graduate students and academic staff. In the final year, you may undertake a novel research project in a research group, which is supervised by an academic member of staff.

Joint Honours

Our Joint Honours programmes are carefully co-ordinated and are fully accredited by the Institute of Physics, and recognised as a full degree-level Physics qualification. You will have access to a wide range of final year projects.

Assessment

Lecture-based courses are normally assessed through a final written examination; experimental and group work through coursework, written reports and assessment interviews. Formative assessment via tutorials, problems classes and web-based means is used throughout the programme.

Careers

Our graduates are much sought after and find employment not just in physics, but in all sectors. All programmes are acceptable as a qualification for admission to higher degrees.

Each degree aims to equip you with the ability to handle complex data sets and concepts, and to interpret material and literary evidence with lucidity.

Core units comprise theory and practice, and include field trips and fieldwork. Optional units cover specialised periods and regions, from human origins to the present day. These range from Britain, Europe and the Mediterranean to Egypt, Africa and the Americas. We offer units on methods and techniques such as human osteology, environmental archaeology, ceramic analysis and applied anthropology. You will write a dissertation on an original topic in your final year.

Programmes available

BA Archaeological Studies

MSci Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences

BSc Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences

BA Archaeology

BA Archaeology and Anthropology

BA Ancient History and Archaeology

Programme Structure

On all our programmes, you will be introduced to the discipline of archaeology from both practical and theoretical perspectives. You will learn the basic skills involved in archaeological fieldwork and artefact analysis and gain comprehension of the archaeology of specific places and periods.

These skills and experiences are encompassed in detail in the BA Archaeology degree. The BSc / MSci Archaeological and Anthropological Sciences degree also includes Bioarchaeology, Biological Anthropology, Human Bones and Geoarchaeology. The BA Archaeology and Anthropology degree programme allows you to study Biological Anthropology and Social Anthropology in addition to Archaeology.

Teaching and Learning

Units in the department are primarily lecture-based, although a number incorporate practical elements, such as laboratory or museum work, and field trips. Seminar presentations are introduced during the second year. The field course provides an opportunity to participate in an archaeological excavation or to undertake anthropological fieldwork.

Joint Honours

The BA Ancient History and Archaeology degree programme has an emphasis on the history and archaeology of the Greek and Roman worlds between the Bronze Age and Late Antiquity. Joint Honours students take an equal number of units in the Departments of Archaeology and Anthropology, Classics and Ancient History. Please also visit the Ancient History programme for entry requirements.

Assessment

Units may be assessed on the basis of essays, exams, notebooks, lab reports, oral and poster presentations, or any combination of these.

Careers

Many graduates undertake further research in archaeology or anthropology and related disciplines. A number have found employment with archaeological units, museums and heritage centres, as well as in the media, leading auction houses, publishing and teaching. Our graduates have also successfully entered other professions, including management, commerce, international development work, and the Civil Service.

Public interest in animal behaviour and animal welfare continues to grow, with widespread implications for the way in which animals are treated, used and included in society. This programme provides you with a thorough scientific education to enable you to assess the welfare of animals and to design improved housing, management and training practices for farm, laboratory, zoo and pet animals. It also demonstrates how animal behaviour can be applied in conservation and farming.

The Animal Behaviour and Welfare programme is unique in the UK in the depth of its underpinning science and teaching within both the Schools of Biological Science and Clinical Veterinary Science.

The programme is accredited by the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (www.asab.org) and satisfies the academic requirements for Certification as a Clinical Animal Behaviourist.

Programmes available

BSc Animal Behaviour and Welfare

Programme Structure

In year one, you will study within the School of Biological Sciences. In year two, you will study at the School of Clinical Veterinary Science at Langford. The Animal Welfare unit will teach methods of assessing welfare across all species. Animal Behaviour will cover motivation, learning, communication, behavioural ecology and physiological processes underlying behaviour. Scientific Method will introduce philosophy of science, experimental design and statistical analysis. The origin of ethics, cultural perspectives and ethical frameworks for making decisions related to animal use will also be taught. In year three, the knowledge and skills you have acquired will be used in practice to design ways of improving animal welfare. You will also develop skills in the diagnosis and treatment of pet animal behavioural problems. An Honours research project forms an integral part of the final year. For further information on the programme please visit The Vet School Website.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching will take a variety of forms. Lectures and practicals form part of the teaching of each year of the programme, within new state-of-the art facilities at Langford. Practicals involve work in laboratories, computer suites, and animal facilities. Frequent seminars and tutorial sessions in small groups will be held in years two and three. You will develop your own learning skills through tasks and coursework set throughout the programme.

Assessment

Assessment during all three years is based on coursework with clearly set objectives (20% of marks), and end-of-year examinations (80% of marks). Some students may be required to attend viva examinations. Details of the breakdown of marks in each year of the programme will be provided in the yearbook issued to all students at the start of the year.

Careers

It is expected that this programme will provide a foundation from which graduates will be able to specialise further and obtain work. This may be with a variety of EU or UK government bodies concerned with policy on animal use, in industry as farm assurance advisors, or with animal welfare charities or wildlife parks. With further qualification, graduates may choose to work as private practitioners dealing with behavioural problems in pets.

The broad-based scientific and quantitative content of the programme will also ensure a good foundation from which graduates can pursue research careers in a broad range of biological disciplines. Opportunities will also exist for graduates to pursue more general careers in management, education, finance or the media.

Programme structure

In the first two years, you take core topics exploring the Greek and Roman world, the sources of information available and the different approaches employed by modern scholars. All first- and second-year students choose a number of option topics from a selection of language, literature, philosophy, art and political, social and cultural history topics, some of which may be taken in other departments (eg Archaeology). Third-year students choose seminar-based special subject units based on the staff’s wide range of research interests. You will also submit a dissertation of 12,000 words on a relevant subject of special interest to you. Please visit the departmental website for a comprehensive list of the option topics and special subjects recently available.

Teaching and Learning

Teaching takes the form of large lectures (up to 60 students) for option topics. However, the teaching of the mandatory core topics is conducted in smaller groups, where personal contact is ensured. All assessed written work is discussed in tutorials, where each student receives individual attention. A unique feature of the Bristol programme is that all third-year students are taught in seminar groups of no more than 15-20.

Joint Honours

If you are reading Ancient History and Archaeology, you take three core topics in the first and second year. You also study two, from a choice of six, historical topics, which focus study on a particular historical era or theme. In the third year, you can choose four special subjects. You will also submit a dissertation of 12,000 words on a subject of special interest to you. Your dissertation should cover a topic that relates to both halves of your joint degree.

Assessment

You must complete all written work and pass the first-year examinations in order to enter the second year. The final degree result is partly determined by examinations at the end of the second and third years and partly by second- and third-year coursework, including essays, portfolios, seminar papers and a dissertation. The proportion of coursework assessment counting towards the final degree is approximately 50%.

Careers

The multidisciplinary approaches of classical subjects provide skills which are transferable to a wide range of careers. Graduates have found careers in research, administration, media, museums, art galleries and heritage management, the Civil Service, law, accountancy, computing, commerce and industry, as well as in teaching.

The South West of England is one of the largest centres for aerospace in Europe and the Department of Aerospace Engineering has been supplying the industry with highly sought-after graduates for more than 50 years. Our four-year undergraduate Masters degree programmes are accredited by the Royal Aeronautical Society and offer you the opportunity to study an exciting, high-technology subject in a global industry. The department has very strong local industrial links which not only provide support for the undergraduate programmes but also offer you the opportunity to take up vacation or longer placements during your time in Bristol.

Programmes available

MEng Aeronautical Engineering

MEng Aeronautical Engineering with Study Abroad

MEng Aeronautical Engineering with Study in Continental Europe

Programme Structure

The programmes are technically demanding and require a high level of interest and commitment from students. There is significant industrial involvement particularly in the areas of design and manufacture; students get involved with a number of major research and group design projects. The programmes focus on the needs of industry, government agencies, operators and research institutions and are broadly based, covering all aspects of aerospace.

In the third and fourth years you choose units from a large number of aerospace specialist and related options. These may include Computational Aerodynamics, Composite Design and Manufacture, Helicopter Aerodynamics and Dynamics, Space Systems, Vibrations and Heat Transfer. Students on H401 spend their third year at a suitable university abroad studying a programme with similar content to those on H410.

Although students apply to the MEng programmes, it is possible to transfer before the start of the third year to the shorter Beng programme. Successful completion of the second-year assessments will guarantee progression to complete the MEng.

Teaching and Learning

You are taught through a combination of lectures, laboratories and projects, the latter two in small groups. Project work is a key part of the third and fourth years. In the third year Design Project, you work in groups of about a dozen. The scope of the final year Research Project can be theoretical, computational, experimental or industry-related; you may even make your own proposal.

Assessment

In the first two years, assessment for most subjects is by examination and coursework (approximate ratio 75% to 25%). In the final two years, there is more emphasis on project work (one quarter of the third year and a third of the final year). Projects are assessed in a number of ways, eg examination of written reports, presentations, a viva and peer-group marking.

Careers

Most graduates from our programmes will find employment in some part of the diverse aerospace industry. However, you would find many opportunities for the application of the same principles in other high-technology industries. The Aeronautical Engineering programmes open numerous career opportunities as they provide a framework for developing good numeracy and creative skills, with a broad technological bias and the ability to work creatively in a team.
