Programmes available
- BA Ancient History
- BA Ancient History and Archaeology
Programme structure
In the first two years, you take core topics exploring the Greek and Roman world, the sources of information available and the different approaches employed by modern scholars. All first- and second-year students choose a number of option topics from a selection of language, literature, philosophy, art and political, social and cultural history topics, some of which may be taken in other departments (eg Archaeology). Third-year students choose seminar-based special subject units based on the staff’s wide range of research interests. You will also submit a dissertation of 12,000 words on a relevant subject of special interest to you. Please visit the departmental website for a comprehensive list of the option topics and special subjects recently available.
Teaching and Learning
Teaching takes the form of large lectures (up to 60 students) for option topics. However, the teaching of the mandatory core topics is conducted in smaller groups, where personal contact is ensured. All assessed written work is discussed in tutorials, where each student receives individual attention. A unique feature of the Bristol programme is that all third-year students are taught in seminar groups of no more than 15-20.
Joint Honours
If you are reading Ancient History and Archaeology, you take three core topics in the first and second year. You also study two, from a choice of six, historical topics, which focus study on a particular historical era or theme. In the third year, you can choose four special subjects. You will also submit a dissertation of 12,000 words on a subject of special interest to you. Your dissertation should cover a topic that relates to both halves of your joint degree.
Assessment
You must complete all written work and pass the first-year examinations in order to enter the second year. The final degree result is partly determined by examinations at the end of the second and third years and partly by second- and third-year coursework, including essays, portfolios, seminar papers and a dissertation. The proportion of coursework assessment counting towards the final degree is approximately 50%.
Careers
The multidisciplinary approaches of classical subjects provide skills which are transferable to a wide range of careers. Graduates have found careers in research, administration, media, museums, art galleries and heritage management, the Civil Service, law, accountancy, computing, commerce and industry, as well as in teaching.
