The department has very strong local industrial links which not only provide support for the undergraduate programmes but also offer you the opportunity to take up vacation or longer placements during your time in Bristol.

Programmes available

  • MEng Aeronautical Engineering
  • MEng Aeronautical Engineering with Study Abroad
  • MEng Aeronautical Engineering with Study in Continental Europe

Programme Structure

The programmes are technically demanding and require a high level of interest and commitment from students. There is significant industrial involvement particularly in the areas of design and manufacture; students get involved with a number of major research and group design projects. The programmes focus on the needs of industry, government agencies, operators and research institutions and are broadly based, covering all aspects of aerospace.

In the third and fourth years you choose units from a large number of aerospace specialist and related options. These may include Computational Aerodynamics, Composite Design and Manufacture, Helicopter Aerodynamics and Dynamics, Space Systems, Vibrations and Heat Transfer. Students on H401 spend their third year at a suitable university abroad studying a programme with similar content to those on H410.

Although students apply to the MEng programmes, it is possible to transfer before the start of the third year to the shorter Beng programme. Successful completion of the second-year assessments will guarantee progression to complete the MEng.

Teaching and Learning

You are taught through a combination of lectures, laboratories and projects, the latter two in small groups. Project work is a key part of the third and fourth years. In the third year Design Project, you work in groups of about a dozen. The scope of the final year Research Project can be theoretical, computational, experimental or industry-related; you may even make your own proposal.

Assessment

In the first two years, assessment for most subjects is by examination and coursework (approximate ratio 75% to 25%). In the final two years, there is more emphasis on project work (one quarter of the third year and a third of the final year). Projects are assessed in a number of ways, eg examination of written reports, presentations, a viva and peer-group marking.

Careers

Most graduates from our programmes will find employment in some part of the diverse aerospace industry. However, you would find many opportunities for the application of the same principles in other high-technology industries. The Aeronautical Engineering programmes open numerous career opportunities as they provide a framework for developing good numeracy and creative skills, with a broad technological bias and the ability to work creatively in a team.
