Programme Structure

We offer a wide range of three- and four-year programmes leading to BSc or MSci degrees. Flexibility is key, with transfer between the BSc and MSci programmes allowed up until the end of the second year. The first year of the Single Honours Physics programme consists of two or three compulsory mathematics and physics units plus one, two or three units available in the University Open Unit catalogue. Typical choices include: languages, chemistry, astronomy, philosophy and mathematics.

For Joint Honours programmes, transfer to Single Honours programmes is permitted at the end of the first year. In the second and later years, a diverse range of optional units in physics and related programmes is available.

Teaching and Learning

Lectures are the principal way of covering the programme material. In the first year, tutorials are used to improve your problem-solving skills and discuss current topics in physics. In later years, problems classes are led by the lecturer on the specific course. There is also small-group training in presentation skills and scientific writing. Experimental work is carried out under the supervision of graduate students and academic staff. In the final year, you may undertake a novel research project in a research group, which is supervised by an academic member of staff.

Joint Honours

Our Joint Honours programmes are carefully co-ordinated and are fully accredited by the Institute of Physics, and recognised as a full degree-level Physics qualification. You will have access to a wide range of final year projects.

Assessment

Lecture-based courses are normally assessed through a final written examination; experimental and group work through coursework, written reports and assessment interviews. Formative assessment via tutorials, problems classes and web-based means is used throughout the programme.

Careers

Our graduates are much sought after and find employment not just in physics, but in all sectors. All programmes are acceptable as a qualification for admission to higher degrees.
